Choose between the Vitamix 5200 and E310 by starting with your normal batch size and storage space. The 5200 includes a 64-ounce container; the E310 includes a 48-ounce container and a Pulse switch. Neither needs to be the right choice for every kitchen, and a sale can reverse the expected price difference.

Choose capacity for the food you actually make
A larger container is useful when your usual recipe outgrows a smaller one. It can mean fewer separate batches for drinks or meal preparation. But capacity is not a command to fill the container to the top: follow the relevant fill limits, loading instructions and recipe quantities.
The E310 deserves a look if your routine involves moderate batches and you want a shorter assembled machine. The 5200 belongs on the list if you regularly prepare more at once. Do not infer minimum workable quantities from capacity alone; texture and ingredient circulation depend on the recipe as well.
Try this before ordering: measure the volume of the smoothie or soup recipe you actually make, then check the manual for that type of blend. That makes the capacity comparison concrete instead of treating the larger number as an automatic upgrade.
Storage can decide the purchase
Measure the gap beneath your cabinets, the depth of your intended counter spot and the cupboard where you will store the machine. A blender that needs dismantling every morning may still suit you, but make that a deliberate choice. Both options require storage for their included container and tamper.
If your available height is between the manufacturers’ listed 18-inch and 20.5-inch heights, assembled fit could favor the E310. Leave practical clearance and check the exact configuration rather than buying to an exact measurement with no margin.
Controls: Pulse or High?
The E310’s Pulse control is relevant if short bursts are part of how you cook. The 5200’s High switch serves a different function; it is not the same control under another name. Both require you to manage the blend rather than assuming a hands-off preset will determine the result.
RTINGS has independently tested both and describes broadly similar performance with differences in capacity and particular tasks. That is useful external evidence, not a taste or durability result from us. We would not claim the larger container guarantees a better smoothie.
Compare the checkout gap, not a permanent “budget” label
Retail offers change. The E310 is not necessarily cheaper on the day you buy. Compare like-for-like condition, included container and accessories, seller, shipping, tax and applicable warranty. A renewed listing is not automatically equivalent to a new machine.
For illustration, if one option costs $100 more and you use it 200 times over a year, the additional equipment cost is 50 cents per use for that year. That is arithmetic, not a forecast of ownership cost or product life. The extra cost only makes sense if the different capacity, controls or coverage matters to you.
Avoid buying spare containers before confirming compatibility. An appealing accessory can erase the savings from the original purchase, and a shared brand name does not prove every container fits every base.
When neither is worth the upgrade
If your current blender already handles your normal recipes, decide what problem the upgrade solves before replacing it. Occasional use may not justify a premium appliance. If you mainly blend soup directly in a pot, an immersion blender is another category to investigate rather than forcing a countertop comparison.
Our practical recommendation: shortlist the E310 for its smaller included container and Pulse control, and the 5200 for its larger included container and listed warranty. Choose the actual offer that fits your routine. We have not established a universal winner for noise, texture or long-term reliability.
